• Lithium extraction from salar brine is one of the most established and largest sources of lithium, accounting for about 35% of global lithium supply.  Salar brine is found mostly in the "Lithium Triangle" of South America, covering parts of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, where vast salt flats hold significant lithium reserves. 

• Lithium brine is pumped from underground sources and then concentrated and purified using vast evaporation ponds.  This approach is very energy efficient, using just the heat from the sun.  However, these ponds require large areas of land, are expensive to build, and the evaporation process is slow, with 12-18 months required to concentrate the brine.
